- 48x60 Audubon Spoonbill Study
A huge painting - so much fun. Tried new style using acrylic like a watercolor - used both brushes and palette knives on this play off of Audubon's Spoonbill painting
- Katie Humphress, Shadow, Oil 24x48 October 2021
So many layers - palette knife oil. I feel like I captured my son, but the face on my daughter isn't quite right. First time trying new color palette w oils. Some of my paints were the ones I'm used to, but I tried using some cheaper paint and it made my daughter particularly difficult - as the paint dried into a beeswax type consistency. I tried a little too hard to get her face right and to me it looks forced and not quite like her - but I love how the colors and background turned out. This is just cell phone pic, but in real life the texture is really fun. Each stroke is 3D - lots and lot of texture

- Acrylic Commission
Super proud of this one - my process is to look at my reference photo and contemplate/ruminate on it until the image goes from my head to my heart. This one went all the way through to my heart because after thinking on it a couple weeks, I had this baby so clearly not just in my mind where I think logically about where the shadows go, but in my heart. Since I felt like I knew her - my "under painting" actually captured her essence in the first layer. This NEVER happens. My art teacher was with me the day I painted this, and when I was done she said "Don't touch this!" Art is spiritual, and once in a while it can feel like magic. That's how I felt when I painted this - I couldn't do this one again if I tried.

- Katie Humphress, Egret at the Zoo, Oil & Acrylic 20x30 Spring 2021
Same reference photo of an egret I took at the zoo - 2 different perspectives. I love studies bc they remind me things can look different depending on how you look at it
- acrylic impressionist portrait
Impressionist portrait - acrylic on canvas. A surprise for a friend - I love to paint gifts when they are really unexpected... and when one of the subjects has a mustache
